Last night, I logged onto my PlayStation 4 and was met with a disconcerting message. Apparently, my PSN password was "no longer valid, and needed to be changed." Changing my password was simple enough, but thanks to the Great PlayStation Hack of 2011, it's hard not to feel concerned anytime Sony is arbitrarily demanding account resets. And as mentioned by The Verge, this isn't an isolated problem.
Sony emailed a number of its PlayStation users last night, requiring a password reset. According to the email, "Sony Entertainment Network team routinely monitors for any irregular activity, and if such activity is detected, we may sometimes reset passwords of affected accounts to protect consumers and their account information."
Essentially, Sony is telling me--along with an unknown number of other PSN users--that something fishy has happened with my account. Earlier this week, massive security breaches were detected at Facebook, Twitter, and Google. Of course, it's entirely possible Sony is just taking precautions, but it doesn't appear every PSN user has faced the same mandatory password resets.
As of this writing, Sony hasn't offered further details beyond the rather vague explanation provided in the emails.
