So a couple weeks back I asked the question 'what makes a game fun' What makes a game fun ?
Simple looking question but it's a deep question which is at the core of every successful game. Game designers around the world ask this question when producing a game making a vision of their fun game.
First off thank you for the responds to that thread it was a good read here is the follow up thread. Due to the posts received I decided it was far better to make a new thread on the subject. My original plan was to post a reply with my views on the subject expanding your answers hoping to get a great thread going. However I feel due to the responds received that would be unfair on this subject it earned a far better response.
What I plan on doing is listing all the posts around with my own input on each one. No wrong or right answer on this , so lets get started.
Thrill of being able to do what you want within the world set out by the designer. I would agree video games give you a degree of freedom not found in any other media form. You can do what you want within a given rule set and are given the tools. Great games give the player all the tools needed and let you get on with it.
Competion side of things is why most games have a reward system built into them.
Fallout 3 is a game which is a time sink for me. Lovely game gives you the freedom along with a ton of tools to do what you want. The key thing to take away fallout 3 is fun game due to not forcing you to remember a set way of doing but giving you all the tools to complete it. You can do whatever you feel is the best way forward want to charge in all guns firing go ahead.
Want to sneak around you can.
Not all games do this and you can put hours into it, some games are short and do this just as fun.
Enjoyed reading that thanks for the insight :)
You covered a couple things others did not for this going to give you +150 rep.
Enjoyed that video thank you
So being able to play out a role in which in the real world you are able to :p
You're right on the opinion bit.
Being able to shape your character makes a game fun as you play out the role. Always enjoyed games which give you a degree of freedom.
This is a great video from Extra Credits called Beyond Fun
Think it's worth a watch.
Thank you for reading this thread did take me some time to put it together. If you want to see more like this off me let me know :)
